Historical Background

DeKalb County, Illinois, was incorporated March 4, 1837. Named for the Alsace baron Johann de Kalb, who fought alongside Washington in the American Revolutionary War, DeKalb County was originally part of Kane County. Settlers began arriving in the area in the mid-1830s, and by 1840 there were more than 300 households enumerated in the county. The rolling prairies made it an attractive destination for farmers.
