Das hebräische Waisenhaus in New York wurde 1860 vom hebräischen Wohltätigkeitsverein (Hebrew Benevolent Society) gegründet, einer Gesellschaft, die sich bereits um jüdische Waisen kümmerte. Er wurde später mit dem Verband für jüdische Kinderversorgung (Jewish Child Care Association) zusammengeführt.

This database contains records from the Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Society for children admitted to or discharged from the Hebrew Orphan Asylums in New York and Pleasantville. The database also contains ledgers of donations to the society. Records may include the following information:

  • Name of child or donor

  • Gender

  • Age and/or birth date

  • Birthplace

  • Date of admission or discharge

  • Place of admission or discharge

  • Date of donation

  • Names of parents

Please note that ages or birthdates may not be accurate. Some orphans returned to the orphanage several times and may be found in the records more than once.
